Alverson Family: {The Front Porch Project} | Cottage Grove MN Family Photographer

April 18th, 2020

Tips for getting great front porch project photos with your kids and pets in St Paul and Minneapolis Minnesota.

2020 has seen a lot of cancellations and as photographers, we have had to pivot our business model and conduct portrait photoshoots from a safe distance. With all of the uncertainty in the world right now, I wanted nothing more than to do a little something (a safe something) to help my community smile! I chatted with neighbors and offered family sessions from a distance, and was delighted to have a few families who were excited to join me on this adventure! As a St Paul family photographer since 2002, I really missed being out in the field interacting with smiling faces. Here is one of my most recent front porch project sessions. These were taken outside a client’s home in Cottage Grove, MN.

Tips for Planning Front Porch Photos

1) Set up a time when your porch or the area of your yard that you want to use is shaded. My house faces west, so the porch is shaded from the from the morning to around noon. Shooting in shade is not only more pleasant for your family so they won’t have to squint, but all the colors in your image will be consistent. If you aren’t available during that time, late evening close to the golden hour is also always an option for less harsh light.

2) Capture your family doing natural things. My favorite images have been mom + dad snuggling their kids or the kids playing chalk or toys on the porch. Don’t worry about getting a perfect “everyone smiling at the camera” shot. Capture doing what you love during this crazy time.

3) Keep it simple. Don’t get all dressed up or stress about these images. Don’t buy new clothes or feel the need to have to coordinate outfits. Honestly, shoot your family as you are, sweats, messy hair, jammies – whatever it is, capture it.

4) Don’t stress! This should be fun (and will also make a great christmas card photo)!
