We all have life bucket list items, right? Some of us dream about visiting a really cool place in the world or skydiving or maybe even going to the olympics. Well, one of mine for the last decade has been to do a newborn kitten photoshoot. I’ve talked about it over and over but just didn’t know where to find myself a group of adorable little furballs before they were old enough to be adopted out. That is until one of my very good friends started fostering for Secondhand Hounds. Knowing how much I’ve always wanted to do this, she contacted me as soon as she found out she was getting the little furballs and I literally felt like a kid on christmas day. There was an extra special bonus knowing that these photos could help bring awareness to these kittens, as well as the organization. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect or how it was going to go posing these little guys, and I have to say, I learned a lot for when I get my next opportunity.

Kittens are a little more active than newborns… so the first 45 minutes of our session was mainly action shots as we tried to wear the kittens out enough that they’d let me wrap them up. My friend, their foster mom, is such an amazing caregiver. These little guys showed up with their own pack in play they could go chill out in if they needed a break from stimulation, as well as a place that contained all their kitty litter from getting all over the studio. They also had all their favorite kitten toys, fresh food and water in their own bowls, and even a brush to comb their hair. You could tell how comfortable these little guys felt around her and her husband.

Even though these little guys were more active than newborns, they were certainly easier to photograph! But the sweetest part was every time I’d sit on the floor to arrange the set, one or both of the little guys would get up from where they were and crawl into my lap to snuggle and fall asleep. It was insanely adorable! If I didn’t have two cats already, I would have probably wanted to keep them. These two are both boys and it is always harder to find cute studio stuff for boys but I couldn’t help myself and had to capture at least one photo with a girlie headband on. Shhhh! The photos ended up being a combination of my ideas and my friends. It was her idea to shoot the kittens while standing on top of glass, which I have to say, ended up being some of my very favorite shots.

I don’t necessarily have any advice for photographing kittens that is any different than newborns beyond having lots of toys ready that will exercise them so they wear out. So instead I want to talk about how important it is to adopt your kittens from a rescue society and to never purchase them from a pet store. There are too many animals that get euthanized every day because there aren’t enough humans to adopt them all. It’s heartbreaking. Adopting from a rescue shelter means that you helped save a furball’s life that may have otherwise been euthanized. The world is overpopulated with homeless pets and adopting means you have helped to control the population. You also are adopting an animal that has received excellent and loving care and one that was not mistreated or neglected because its sole purpose of being born was for someone to make money. There are numerous shelters around Minnesota. Some of my favorite things about Secondhand Hounds is that many of the animals they rescue came from other shelters where they were at risk for euthanization. Many are then placed into temporary foster homes so that they can experience a loving home. If you aren’t looking to adopt a new pet at this time, or foster, consider donating to this wonderful organization and help more beautiful animals find their forever homes!
