LOOK AT THOSE EYES! Meet gorgeous baby Aubrey! Aubrey was having a bit of a rough time adjusting to life outside of mom, so we ended up postponing her photos until the 6 week age. Photographing posed neworn shots can get a bit harry at this age but Miss A knocked it out of the park! It isn’t too often I get to photograph calm newborns with their eyes wide open – some of the most beautiful shots in my opinion! Not only that but because she was so alert, I enjoyed being able to have a conversation with her during our time together. With this session, mom let me choose what colors to use so I went with some that I love that almost never get requested. The dark cranberry color looked stunning against her skin tone! And I love the soft neutral tone of the sage. It’s very timeless and matches everything. If you are wondering where I got her adorable cranberry and lace outfit and her headbands, I actually sew and make a lot of my own newborn props! You can find the pattern at Props by Posies!

Can You Photograph An “Older” Newborn? Yes!

Common knowledge within the newborn photography community is that newborn photo sessions need to be done within the first 14 (or even first 10) days. There are many reasons for this. Having come from a quite a small environment recently, they are able to curl up into those adorable curly and squishy poses with ease. Also newborns at this age tend to fall asleep and stay asleep, leading to a smoother and faster session.

That being said, sometimes parents do not come into the studio within the first two weeks. Perhaps they didn’t know newborn photos needed to be done so soon. Mom may have had a rough birth and is just trying to recover. Maybe the thought of packing up their baby and heading out of the house so soon is just too overwhelming (I know it was for me!). Whatever the case may be, does it mean they missed their opportunity? Absolutely not!

With patience and appropriate expectations (and a lot of milk!), I have successfully photographed newborns up to 8 weeks. We wrap them up, we can take family and sibling photos, we can capture the little details and more often then not, we can get those sleepy bean bag poses.

Yes, it is easier when newborn babies are only a few days old. However I could never deny a family beautiful newborn photographs because their baby is outside of the ideal window.

So what are the reasons for parents needing to come in later with baby?

  1. Baby was born early and needs to be in NICU for a time – this is no issue at all, we will just schedule the time once baby is out of hospital.  This is especially common with multiples.
  2. Asian and Indian families (and no doubt other cultures) have around four to five weeks at home being looked after by family members and not able to leave the home.  I think this is an amazing tradition and so good for the parents so I’m very happy to schedule the shoot for when baby is 4-5 weeks old.
  3. If my schedule is full and I’m unable to fit them in for a week or two.  I have been so pleased when clients are more than happy to wait to get photos with me during my busy times.  And I can still get brilliant results for them at any age.
  4. Adoption can play a roll in when a family receives their new bundle of joy.
  5. If I am sick I won’t photograph babies so I will reschedule any shoots until I am well, and sometimes this may be over that 10 day mark or later.  Or the parents or baby maybe sick and unable to make the shoot when baby is under 10 days.  None of this should be an issue as the health of baby is far more important than the age at which photos are taken.
  6. I have to take some holidays throughout the year. I do my best to fit clients in where I can but sometimes this does mean waiting a week or two to get in, in which case baby is a bit older.

And as a huge positive for photos of slightly older babies, you usually get lots of lovely eye open shots as well.

So please if you are considering having photos and worried about having to get them in those first 10 days, don’t fear.  I am very skilled at posing babies of any age.  Do I still recommend pre-booking before baby is born? Yes I do.  The reason being is that the communication between us has started and you can feel free to get in touch anytime to let me know baby has arrived and we can book the session date.  We might book the session date for when baby is 5 weeks old, but at least I know then to keep that date for you and you know you have a session date booked and sorted.

Meet sweet Ms. Dolores. Because I love her name so much, I have to add in here that Dolores was named after her grandmothers on each family side. That right, both her Mom and Dad had grandmothers named Dolores. So neat! Ms Dolores is the daughter of a good friend of mine, as well an entire family I’m rather fond of, the Hecklingers. For Ms D’s session, I asked her Mom if she had any requests for the setup. Purples, greens, all natural / nature. The two green fluffs are from one of my favorite vendors Oh So Fleeting. They really are as soft as they look. The round basket is one that I’ve had several people contact me wanting to know where I got it. It came from Pier One probably 10 years ago, so sorry on that one. They are tough to find! The twig bed can be purchased several places, I went with Intuition Backdrops, who if you don’t know, also sell an awesome variety of props.

Do note that the photo above is a composite. Mom was holding the baby in the background. Due to safety reasons, I highly recommend never letting young siblings hold babies on their own.
