Meet the Reim Family! It isn’t all that often that I get to do a photoshoot with adult children – they behave so nicely haha! The Reim’s live in North Oaks, right down the road from the James J Hill Historical Farm. This place is sentimental to them so what better place to take photos than someplace meaningful. Plus, it meant that I got to take photos at a new location which is always exciting for me. Everyone was soooo darn photogenic! I had such a hard time narrowing down the photos. No blinking and all stunning smiles. This family hasn’t done professional portraits in forever or ever. So how often SHOULD you do updated family photos? Well, here are my thoughts:

How Often Should You Take Professional Family Photos?

FAMILIES WITH LITTLE ONES: I recommend having professional family portraits taken at least once a year. Time with your little ones is fleeting! And during everyday life, it’s hard to remember to snap photos, let alone set up the shot for ones you would want to hang on the walls. Having professional family photos done is such a sweet way to document your life in seasons!

PHOTOS ARE NOT JUST FOR THE HOLIDAYS: If I asked you when during the year you would for sure have family portraits booked, you would probably say for the holidays — to go with your Holiday or New Year’s cards. There are so many memories that occur within a family during a single year, that it’s hard to remember it all without having stunning imagery capturing the best of the seasons. While I always recommend at least capturing family portraits once a year, booking at least two sessions in a year will give you a wonderful reflection of how your family has grown over the months, especially in the early years where they grow leaps and bounds in those short months.

NEVER MISS A SINGLE MOMENT: It is so important to not miss all of the sweet milestone moments for each child. So much changes within a year, especially if you have young children in your family. Babies lose their infant rolls, toddlers grow into preschoolers, children become taller, and you might have another baby bump before the year is over. Documenting all of your family milestones throughout the year guarantees that you will have those special occasions forever saved in beautiful imagery.

FAMILIES WITH ADULT CHILDREN: It can become so much harder to coordinate schedules after your kids start lives of their own. We recommend updating your family portraits at least every 5 years. However, have you had a new member marry into the family or welcomed a new grandchild? For growing families, we recommend updating your portraits at least every two years. Parents and grandparents are getting older so make sure you continue to capture new portraits for everyone to be able to cherish for years to come.

MARRIED COUPLES WITHOUT CHILDREN: Every year is ideal for amazing Holiday cards, however, every 2-3 years is pretty standard. And let me tell you, it is so much fun to be able to look back over the years and see how much you’ve grown together. Professional quality photos make it even that much more fun! Don’t forget to include your pets. After all, they are our best friends.
