Vivienne: {9 Months Old}

May 10th, 2016

I don’t think that I have ever met such a happy kid before! Sweet Vivienne was so full of smiles. I love the colors and mom and dad picked out for her, she looks great in pinky-peach. See that gold metallic block she is holding? That was one of my latest DIY projects. I found […]

See that gold metallic block she is holding? That was one of my latest DIY projects. I found wooden blocks on clearance at Target so I glued some scrape booking paper on there that I already had at home and there you go! Fun, stylish, baby blocks! Another great find was the teal bench – gotta love shopping Home Goods for baby props! (I’m kind of addicted!)

Isn’t she just the sweetest! I love this simple yet beautiful color set of light pink and creams with lace. That laundry basket used to belong to my grandmother! And both the cream and pink headbands were handmade by your truly.

It was truly a privilege to be asked by the Moltzan’s if I could create a photo for them that would include ALL of their children. As many of my friends and clients know, I have a soft spot in my heart for preemies and angel babies. Through my photography (and as an active photographer for NILMDTS), I strive for remembrance and awareness. Angie and Greg, I hope I have been able to provide you with a beautiful remembrance. xoxo

A few unplanned photos from last nights impromptu Moon shoot. Lesson learned, I need to keep my gear better organized in case of last minute excursions. Super bummed I didn’t think to go out when the moon was low in the sky!

Special thanks to Joe for pulling me outside to see this and carrying my crap!

Gear:
Canon 5D Mark III
Tamron 150-600mm VC
Tripod
Cable Release

Settings:
Daylight Balance WB
F6.3
1/4 Second- 1 Second
ISO 200

Helpful Tips:
*Use a heavy duty tripod! (I couldn’t find the attachment plate to mine and was super bummed out!)
*Don’t forget to turn off any image stabilization (I forgot about this the first half hour and couldn’t think of why my photos were coming out blurry)
*Make sure to lock your mirror up for long exposures. Very helpful in reducing camera motion.
*If you don’t have a cable release or wireless remote, make sure to set the timer.
*Take your time, and don’t forget to enjoy the view!

Guess what??? Our neighborhood was blessed this spring with two twin baby fawns! I am SOOOO in love! Those of you who haven’t been to the studio may not be aware that we are located about a mile back in the woods between 3 lakes, also known as the tri-lakes area of Lake Elmo. We get some spectacular wild life here, considering we are located so close to downtown Saint Paul. These two beauties have been top photography priority for me the last few weeks. It was pretty hard to catch them away from mama. Also, I’m probably a little biased but we have the best yard in the neighborhood, the local deer pass through one to two times per day! Every time I see the babies, I run up to the window and try to sweet talk them into coming closer- hoping they will get used to the sound of my voice. They seem intrigued! But mama does not.

GEAR:

Canon 5D Mark III
Tamron 150-600mm VC-
In case you haven’t read some of my other recent posts, I am in LOVE with this lens! So sharp!

One thing that I had always wanted to see ever since I was a little girl, was a dog sled race! My boyfriend and I have a tradition going that every year we visit Bayfield, WI during the winter. We both love the snow. This year we just happened to pick the same weekend that the Apostle Island Dog Sled Race was going on. How do you not go? So, I put on my heated (yes heated!) winter coat, cracked open some hand and foot warmers, and off we went. I never expected to see so few photographers at this event. If I would have known I would have run of the course, I would have planned my gear and route more accordingly. Either way, I still got some pretty great shots of these sweet and so very excited puppies.

It isn’t often enough that I get to venture away from the studio and have the opportunity to photograph an incredibly awesome event such as Crashed Ice. This is an event I’ve been wanting to shoot for the last few years. The weather was even fairly cooperative. A steaming 20 degrees above zero. Here are a few of the many great shots I captured. High speed skating is by far one of the most difficult to freeze the action when shooting- so- here is a bit of my personal advice. Now, there are a bunch of different ways one could go about capturing this type of event, everyone has something that works best for them.

Gear:

Canon 5D Mark III
Canon 135mm F2Monopod

ISO: 1600
F-Stop: f2.8
Shutter: 1/640

Here are a few tips. First, yes, I went with a fixed lens instead of my 70-200mm because I knew that it wasn’t going to be possible to zoom in and out and get the camera to refocus on subjects during the 1 1/5 seconds they would be flying past me, therefore, I opted for my sharpest lens. My 135mm never lets me down! With that insanely sharp outcome, I knew that cropping ability was going to increase drastically. I also new that I wasn’t going to get multiple shots at shooting these guys. Many of the teams are a one and done kind of deal. Even though I understand the inner workings of the Canon 5D highly intricate focusing system designed for high speed action, I wasn’t going to take a risk of relying on it. Therefore, I chose to pick where in the jump or area of the frame I was most interested in freezing the skaters and locked my focus in on the one spot. The outcome was better than I could have hoped for. With the Canon’s 5D Mark III 6 fps in full resolution capability, I was able to capture multiple tack-sharp, mid-air skaters with each run. Also, PUSH that ISO! You can always use the Canon software, or Lightroom to help reduce noise, but you can’t undo a blurry subject. I do like how my images came out, but in hynes sight I would have pushed my ISO to 3200 and stopped down my lens so that I could get a little more in focus. But, there is always next year, right? Last tip, get there EARLY so you are right by the track and when you find a good spot, covet it. I made the mistake of thinking I could walk around and jump in at another area of track but boy was I wrong. Any other area I found was open for a reason, last pickings!
