I LOVE photographing seniors! But these last few falls my schedule has been so busy that I haven’t been able to fit many in. (super sad face) This year, I had the great honor of photographing my little cousin, Julia. Which is crazy to me because she was born the same year I opened my photography business – boy does that make me feel old! She was one of the cutest babies I’ve ever seen and even now nearly 18 years later, she is still such a doll! Julia is in her senior year at Hastings High School so what better place to take photos than in her home town? It is seriously a gold mine of backdrops to choose from. I’ve shot several weddings in this town but never a senior so this was a lot of fun for me – so fun that I took WAY too many photos.

If you’re from the Twin Cities, then you know that the weather this late summer / early fall has been total crap. Yeah, I can’t even sugar coat this one. 5 days out of the week have been raining for weeks now. I have been totally lucky though and haven’t had to reschedule too many sessions. Julia’s first scheduled day got rained out. Then our makeup day looked like it was going to be great but literally 10 minutes into shooting the sky went dark – which is great for some photos but not the beautiful wildflower field photos she and her mom were really hoping for. So…. we went out a second day for more photos. I don’t normally do this but, well, it’s my cousin! Here are a few of her favorite photos:

These first few photos were taken in downtown Hastings at and near the beauty school. One great thing about the weather is that the town was pretty quiet which made shooting a lot easier. The last shot was taken at the old mill ruins along the river.

If there was any advice I could give for shooting senior girls, it would be this:

  • Always ask them what bothers them the most when they see photos of themselves and focus on making those issues non-existant in the photos you take. My senior photographer did a great job at this when I was this age. My senior photos were the first time I saw photos of myself that I really loved and couldn’t wait to show off to others. Make your clients feel this way and more will come by word of mouth.
  • Make sure their legs and arms are never straight. I always remember the rule I was told way back in school nearly 20 years ago “if it bends, bend it!”
  • Smiling in front of the camera can be uncomfortable – I know this first hand. A really good fake laugh can do a lot for a photo. But that too can be really uncomfortable. So, I always laugh with my clients. Except I try to laugh harder and louder so they don’t feel the attention falling on them.
  • Unless you are crazy tall, always bring a step ladder! I try to shoot down on my subjects as often as possible. It is so much more flattering for both the jawline and waistline.

I LOVE shooting in wildflowers and Julia had the perfect dress for it. She is totally rocking this mustard yellow, which is my favorite color but I don’t look this amazing when I wear it. These were taken at Old Mill Park.

When I discovered that the lock and dam has an area that looks this beautiful, we just had to go catch some sunset photos there!  How beautiful are those sky colors? Julia was a trooper – that water was NOT warm and isn’t wasn’t exactly easy getting to this location.

Ok, this last photo isn’t a family favorite, but I love it! Yes, her hair looks a bit crazy but that’s what happens when one jumps super high in the air. The bridge with the sign and the sunset – I feel like this is Hastings pride in a photo.

Meet my handsome little brother, Lucas. A few years ago my family relocated to Fort Worth, Texas, which meant big sister needed to make a special trip down there to capture this moment. I’m not familiar with the area so my first challenge was trying to find a place to take his photos. Fort Worth is quite different from Saint Paul. Many places are fenced off. So, we headed down to the Stockyards and found some pretty fun spots. My second challenge was the Texas sun. So much brighter than in Minnesota. I learned that the only possible way to use some of these great locations was to wait until the sun was setting. My last challenge was that, well, Lucas is my brother and it is always more difficult to photograph family. All-in-all, I think we got some pretty great shots. Senior Guy against brick wall in Fort Worth, TXSenior guy sitting on train tracks in Fort Worth, TXOne thing I want to mention here is that these tracks we used in the stockyards are for show. No trains actually use them. I assume they were used in the past but they now dead end into the stockyards. Safety of my clients is always a priority.  Senior Boy standing by brick wall in Blue Shirt Senior boy in plaid shirt standing by old fence in Fort Worth TX Senior Boy in blue plaid sitting outside as the sun sets Senior boy by train tracks as the sun sets in Fort Worth TX

I LOVE photographing seniors! Especially CUTE ones 🙂 And I always have fun with girls because I can play with fun props and outfits. A few weeks ago I went out with Paige to Hudson, WI to a park that she picked called Birkmose Park which is also known as lookout park. As I was driving there I drove by the most awesome orange rusty truck I had ever seen and became a gitty school girl hoping she was going to let me photograph her in front of it. Of course the weather just couldn’t cooperate. It was freezing cold, overcast, extremely windy, and there were some drizzles here and there. Pretty much the exact opposite to a perfect day. You really wouldn’t have known though by how the photos turned out, at least I think.

Posing girls can be easy but can also be hard. Sometimes they feel really uncomfortable in front of the camera and their posture is very stiff so it is very important that you take the time to notice how everything looks in the photo from their hands, feet, head, back, legs, you name it. I often make people stand back up and then sit back down how they normally would and not think about the fact that they are having their photo takien to avoid trying to just unstiffen their limbs. This usually works quite well. Also having them take deep breaths is a good trick too to try.

Since mother nature gave me an over cast soft box to work with my lighting was really even toned but flat so I used a 580EX II off camera under a softbox on a light stand and then used a device on my camera which allowed me to manually adjust my flash from my camera. Works pretty darn slick and when it is cold you don’t have a lot of time to monkey around so this method gives what I think to be fairly nice side lighting with very short set up time. Highly recommend!

senior girl with old truckHow fun is this photo? I’m surprised her skin didn’t get stuck to the metal of the truck though- it was that cold! I just love how the peach color of her dress matches the orange and rust colors of the truck.

Once again you are seeing quite a few images taken with my favorite sexy lens, Canon’s 135mm F2.0. I just can’t get enough of it and won’t leave home with out it. It makes everyone look good. It was a ton of fun getting to know you Paige and I hope you love you images as much as I do! xoxo

I can’t believe my baby brother is graduation from high school! Oh my gosh I feel old! It’s always interesting when your clients are people you are close to. The blessing is that I feel like I know his personality enough to have been able to capture the real him in his images. His true smile, attitude, and character. Wait… go back again, his -attitude! 🙂 Ha! It wasn’t in my plan to photograph my own brother until he said to me “I want you to take my photos because I know you’ll do a better job than anyone else will.” Now, how could I say no to that? I love you Colin and I hope you love how your senior photos turned out as much as I do!

We did Colin’s photos in two sessions because the first one didn’t go according to plan. Sometimes that is just how these things go! The first session we did in the fall and the second in the spring. It is fun to see how much he matured in just those few months. The first session was shot at Saint Anthony Main. One of my favorite places to go. So many back grounds to work with. Unfortunately, the weather was too windy this day.

Our second session was in Stillwater. Another one of my all time favorite places to go. This day was cloudy and rainy but I think the photos still turned out awesome. It gave the old railroad bridge even more of a rustic look. Want a laugh? Ask Colin how I got him to smile. It’s hard making your own brother smile when he already knows your jokes and sarcasm. 🙂

Still fitting in a few seniors before the end of the school year. This cute lady is Sarah. She works out at Como Zoo at Como Town so we thought it would be fun if we did her senior photos out there as well. We had some fun out by the kid rides. Made for some very colorful photos. And then we headed down by the Enchanted Garden. This area is always a favorite for many of my clients because there are so many beautiful back grounds to choose from. We were lucky with such a beautiful evening. Sarah is one of the biggest hello kitty fans I know! We had to get a photo of that! 🙂 Seniors- Your senior photos should represent who you are right now so that in the future you can look back and remember that person. I love it when kids bring their favorite stuff. It tells such a great story about them! Some ideas- instruments, dance outfits, pets, car, sports jerseys and equipment, the sky is the limit!

Meet Brandon! Why is he so good looking? Because he’s my nephew! Brandon likes the outdoors so I wanted to make sure we did his photos were we could add in some outdoor character so we headed to one of my favorite quaint towns, Stillwater. I love photographing seniors in the fall time and with the evening golden light. We had a lot of fun playing around with all the fun props he brought with him. I think they really showed his personality.
