Greene Family: {fall family photos}

Fall is one of my favorite times to photograph outdoors. This year in Minnesota, the weather has been a bit weird. Fall came late and fast, the cold came early, and ideal fall color shooting time was greatly shortened. That’s ok! Green leaves (because it has been too cold for the leaves to change) mixed with cute fall outfits still looks amazing! I love when my client’s show up all cute and stylish – I mean, what photographer wouldn’t? That’s promo material right there! The Greene family nailed it.

I know that most of my sessions come off looking like everything must have gone amazingly well, the kiddos had fun and were full of smiles, and the parents had a great time. Don’t let the photos fool you – THIS RARELY happens! Like… once a year? So what’s the trick? Patience. Lots of patience. And as I tell all my clients, my patience will always out match theirs. I walk into a session expecting to have to sweet talk, buddy up, dance like a chicken, jump up and down, sing silly songs, and remain chipper for the next two hours no matter how the children act. Sound exhausting? Well yes, I often don’t need to go to the gym after a session with children. But the reality is that anyone can put up with anything when you know that in two hours time, it will all be over. So why not make the very best of those two hours you can. That’s my perspective. And after we work our butt off for two hours as the children do everything in their power to let us know how much they don’t want to take photos, we still manage to capture some amazing smiles and the session is always a success.

Why am I going off on this tangent on this post? lol, I’ll leave that to your imagination but sometimes I have sessions where the parents are convinced there is no way we got any good photos after the two hours of zero cooperation from their children to then receive their photos and be blown away. That’s my job, that’s what I do, and I LOVE IT!

So, TODAY’S TIP IS: Pull out all the stops, act like an idiot in public, come prepared with ticklers (what I call my long duster on a stick that I use to tickle the kids), move quickly, change positions often, go with the flow… go over the top because you can put up with anything for two hours – and the end results will be amazing.

Buche’s: {family photos}

September 20th, 2018

I am so blessed. Through the years, my friends have been some of my biggest supporters. I started doing photos for Jodi 12 years ago! I have photographed personal portraits for her, engagement photos, wedding (the ones I could capture when I wasn’t too busy being a bridesmaid), newborn, milestone, and family. As the kids […]

As the kids have gotten older, things have become a bit more chaotic lol, but even so, the session’s with the Buche’s is one of my favorite sessions of every year.

This year Jocelyn was a bit less enthusiastic about taking photos and gave me a run for my money (no need to go to the gym and lift weights for a few days after this session) but we still managed to get some super cute ones! Maddox had a pretty good time with the car – in out, in out. Mom and Dad got pretty darn tired and were ready for a nap after.

Funny thing is that so often, it’s mom and dad’s faces that run the family photos! Their faces scream – oh my gosh, if you don’t sit still and smile for 5 freaking seconds I’m going to… haha! Yet they are the ones not smiling. I often have to head swap parents faces more than children. At every family session, I have to remind the parents that they need to act like they are having a great time. Family photos are like social media… It always looks like everyone else’s professional photos are perfect and you wonder why yours were a nightmare. Fact – almost everyone ones are a nightmare.

Pro Photographer Tip: This one goes out to the parents. When your kids are aking like jerks, threatening to take away or throw away everything they love and that they no longer are going to get the treat promised to them for taking photos NEVER works to get the kids to behave. Weird, I know haha! I hear these statements at pretty much every single child session I shoot and every time it makes things worse. Instead, wait until after the photo shoot is over to tell them you are throwing away all their precious toys haha! ๐Ÿ™‚

Nick and Jodi {Engaged}

Nick and Jodi are ENGAGED! And it’s about darn time ๐Ÿ™‚ Ha ha. Jodi happens to be one of my best friends and it is such an honor to have been asked to photograph her and Nick’s engagement photos. But… let’s be honest, there always feels like more pressure when I photograph friends who are so close to me and I know that so many more of my friends will be seeing and critiquing these photos. Jodi wrote on her facebook page after the session that she knew that because I was the photographer “They would turn out perfect!” Geesh… no pressure there ๐Ÿ™‚

This afternoon was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed getting to spend some time with Nick and Jodi together. We went to Matoska Park, in White Bear Lake. This was my first time shooting at this location and it for sure won’t be my last. I highly recommend you checking it out for any portrait session, but beware, it is a photographers goldmine so there tends to be lots of people being having their pictures taken there at all times. Jodi and Nick had a sentimental attachment to this gazebo which made this location even more special. I really LOVE it when couples choose a spot that has meaning to them. It adds so much more character to their photos.

We started our session around 4:30 pm, with me wanting to work with golden light. There is just never enough time. I could have spend all day with the two of them and never have gotten tired of photographing them. The bridge added a new color dimension to the photos that worked well with the sun setting. I always allow for 3 hours of shooting even though I only quote for 2 because you never know what may cut into your time- like waiting for other photographers to get out of your shot. Or in this instance, we had such a great area to work with that I didn’t want to stop shooting until the sun completely set. Often time those last minute photos can be some of the favorites.

Thanks you Nick and Jodi for asking me to be apart of something so special and personal in your life. It is a great honor. I hope you love your photos as much as I do and I truly believe they captured the fun, love, and happiness I see you two share with each other every moment I have known you. I wish for you a lifetime of happiness! And, I can’t wait until the wedding day- I’ll be the one with tears streaming down her face like an idiot! x o x o

Who doesn’t LOVE kittens? They are the most adorable tiny little fluff balls that just want to be held and want to play and are just oh so cute cute cute! I was so excited when a client got a hold of me and asked… so? would you photograph my kitten? HECK YA I will! How about right this second, and then I might just stick him in my pocket and bring him home with me. ๐Ÿ™‚ Little Miko was 8 weeks old when we did his photo session. Boy do those critters grow fast and run fast and get bored fast. We went out to Battle Creek to play in the grass and it didn’t take long until he was ready to go home so not to many poses for this little guy. But all in all, it’s pretty tough to take a photo of a kitten that isn’t cute. So if you have a kitten, puppy, horse, goat… monkey… mouse… bunny… anything young and fur-ball like and want photos done, let me know! I don’t get asked to do this often enough. (please no snakes or spiders- must be fur-ball in nature)

I love the back grounds that we found to work with and how all the colors flowed together. It can be tricky finding fun placing to work with when shooting boudoir photographs such as these. We used a friends back yard that had a beautiful green marsh in back and then we traveled out to downtown St. Paul which is continuously one of my favorite back drops to use. Boudoir photographs make a perfect gift for that someone special in your life. Great job Jessie! This was super fun!

Aren’t they one good looking family? Iyanna is growing up so fast. She brought along her favorite things, her purses! Baby J already has too many places to go and things to do so he wasn’t too interested in getting his picture taken tonight. Hopefully we can try again when he gets a little older. He is going to grow up to be such a handsome man!

It is such an honor to be able to photograph not only one of my dearest friends during one of the most personal times in her life but also for her to be an amazing photographer and have her ask me to take photos for her. For me, these photos needed to be perfect. I think maternity photography is one of the most difficult artistic works of art. There is such a fine line between elegant baby bump and too much information. I love how Kristenโ€™s photos turned out. They captured how amazingly beautiful of a person she is both inside and out. I can’t wait to meet the little baby bean inside! You are going to make an amazing mother. What a fun experience this was to share together!

I truly believe that pregnant women are the most beautiful of all things in the entire world. Suz is the epidomy of this statement. I had the opportunity of getting to know Susan through a good friend of mine and we had a lovely girls evening of shooting. Here is a tip for you photographers out there. If you are doing a maternity session, bring along a few healthy snacks for the session. Mama’s to be get tired a lot faster and hungry a lot sooner because of those little bundles inside and it can be a nice surprise for them if you have some fresh fruit, crackers and cheese, and water on hand. Something that they may have forgotten to bring with them. These photos are just a few of my favorites from Susan’s session. There were so many great ones it was hard to pick! I can’t wait to meet baby girl Payton!
