We all have life bucket list items, right? Some of us dream about visiting a really cool place in the world or skydiving or maybe even going to the olympics. Well, one of mine for the last decade has been to do a newborn kitten photoshoot. I’ve talked about it over and over but just didn’t know where to find myself a group of adorable little furballs before they were old enough to be adopted out. That is until one of my very good friends started fostering for Secondhand Hounds. Knowing how much I’ve always wanted to do this, she contacted me as soon as she found out she was getting the little furballs and I literally felt like a kid on christmas day. There was an extra special bonus knowing that these photos could help bring awareness to these kittens, as well as the organization. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect or how it was going to go posing these little guys, and I have to say, I learned a lot for when I get my next opportunity.

Kittens are a little more active than newborns… so the first 45 minutes of our session was mainly action shots as we tried to wear the kittens out enough that they’d let me wrap them up. My friend, their foster mom, is such an amazing caregiver. These little guys showed up with their own pack in play they could go chill out in if they needed a break from stimulation, as well as a place that contained all their kitty litter from getting all over the studio. They also had all their favorite kitten toys, fresh food and water in their own bowls, and even a brush to comb their hair. You could tell how comfortable these little guys felt around her and her husband.

Even though these little guys were more active than newborns, they were certainly easier to photograph! But the sweetest part was every time I’d sit on the floor to arrange the set, one or both of the little guys would get up from where they were and crawl into my lap to snuggle and fall asleep. It was insanely adorable! If I didn’t have two cats already, I would have probably wanted to keep them. These two are both boys and it is always harder to find cute studio stuff for boys but I couldn’t help myself and had to capture at least one photo with a girlie headband on. Shhhh! The photos ended up being a combination of my ideas and my friends. It was her idea to shoot the kittens while standing on top of glass, which I have to say, ended up being some of my very favorite shots.

I don’t necessarily have any advice for photographing kittens that is any different than newborns beyond having lots of toys ready that will exercise them so they wear out. So instead I want to talk about how important it is to adopt your kittens from a rescue society and to never purchase them from a pet store. There are too many animals that get euthanized every day because there aren’t enough humans to adopt them all. It’s heartbreaking. Adopting from a rescue shelter means that you helped save a furball’s life that may have otherwise been euthanized. The world is overpopulated with homeless pets and adopting means you have helped to control the population. You also are adopting an animal that has received excellent and loving care and one that was not mistreated or neglected because its sole purpose of being born was for someone to make money. There are numerous shelters around Minnesota. Some of my favorite things about Secondhand Hounds is that many of the animals they rescue came from other shelters where they were at risk for euthanization. Many are then placed into temporary foster homes so that they can experience a loving home. If you aren’t looking to adopt a new pet at this time, or foster, consider donating to this wonderful organization and help more beautiful animals find their forever homes!

Who doesn’t LOVE kittens? They are the most adorable tiny little fluff balls that just want to be held and want to play and are just oh so cute cute cute! I was so excited when a client got a hold of me and asked… so? would you photograph my kitten? HECK YA I will! How about right this second, and then I might just stick him in my pocket and bring him home with me. 🙂 Little Miko was 8 weeks old when we did his photo session. Boy do those critters grow fast and run fast and get bored fast. We went out to Battle Creek to play in the grass and it didn’t take long until he was ready to go home so not to many poses for this little guy. But all in all, it’s pretty tough to take a photo of a kitten that isn’t cute. So if you have a kitten, puppy, horse, goat… monkey… mouse… bunny… anything young and fur-ball like and want photos done, let me know! I don’t get asked to do this often enough. (please no snakes or spiders- must be fur-ball in nature)

Real Estate: March House

March 18th, 2011

Photographing homes can be both some of the easiest photography and some of the hardest. It requires an ultra wide angle lens, a tripod, some wireless flashes for both inside and outside, and if possible some daylight balanced light bulbs for the house hold lamps. This house I had to spend some time staging. I […]

Dear Friends and Clients!

I can’t believe it is already the end of yet another successfully amazing year!, thanks to ALL OF YOU! I am blessed to be given so many amazing clients year after year. It is all of you who make me love my job so much. This year I took a life altering trip to Romania with a friend where I got to experience what life is like living in a small village in the Carpathian mountains. There is nothing that can make you more well rounded than taking submerging yourself completely out of your field of experiences. This opportunity was one that most people will never get to experience in their life and I feel I am a better person for my experiences.

I can’t wait for what 2011 has in store. I have a feeling it is going to be a GREAT year! 🙂

xoxo,
Kristen

Thank you clients for yet again another {fantastic} year. I couldn’t have done it without you. This year I have grown so much and I owe much of that to the support of all of you. I am so blessed to get to work with such amazing people session after session and that each of you ask me to be apart of your lifetime of memories. I love every moment of it.

This year was filled with some amazing travel experiences that I will never forget. I got to tour almost the entirety of Thailand, which is one of the most breathtaking places I have ever been in my entire life. The people were warm and inviting. The culture was vastly new and full of photo opportunities and the food was to die for. I can not wait to return again, which I promise I will do. Later in the year I traveled to Germany. A very different dynamic from Thailand but also amazing. For the first time I learned that there is beer that exists that I do like! I loved the food here even more. What a relaxing culture. I could have spent every afternoon sitting outside at cafes drinking espressos. And, to my surprise, they still wear lederhosen in their daily wear, so I too decided to pick myself up a set. 🙂 Lastly, I traveled to Italy which is a wealth of history. I toured much of the northern half down to Rome. It was nothing short of amazing. Yet again, unbelievable food, a lifetime of photographs, and lovely people. I recommend all of these places to all of you.

I can’t wait to see what 2009 has in store and I hope to see you there! Thank you for your continued support!
